With 21 million people unemployed and 15.3 million on temporary layoff, those working within the US continue to face the negative effects of the current pandemic. Individuals across the nation are now searching for work in an incredibly competitive and sparse job market.

So what other ways can someone stay afloat if they are part of the millions affected? Whether you’re just looking to make extra funds to cover your pay cut or are in need of a full-time salary, we wanted to share 6 easy ways that you can earn an income during the pandemic!

1. GrubHub or DoorDash Delivery Driver

Door-to-door food delivery services, such as DoorDash and Grubhub, have become the new normal for ordering takeout. These services have seen a recent influx in orders due to social distancing measures, and are constantly looking to hire delivery drivers across participating cities in the US. Becoming a delivery driver with one of these services is a great way to earn some extra cash on the side, while also having full control over your own work schedule.

According to Indeed, the average salary of a DoorDash Delivery Driver is $43,506 per year. Similarly, a Grubhub Delivery Driver can average about $43,452 per year. This can fluctuate based on hours worked per week/month, but gives a good baseline for what to expect.

If DoorDash or GrubHub aren't in your area, you can also check out similar food delivery services such as Uber Eats and Postmates

2. Amazon Delivery Driver or Flex Job

In order to enable faster deliveries, Amazon has been rapidly increasing the number of warehouses within its network across the country. As they continue to expand, the need for delivery drivers has become more and more prevalent. Back in March, they announced that they are planning to hire 100,000 additional warehouse and delivery workers to keep up with the recent surge in online orders.

Working as an Amazon Delivery Driver is more geared towards individuals looking for a full-time commitment, however they also offer Amazon Flex delivery which allows people to use their own vehicles for delivery and choose when they decide to work (similar to a DoorDash delivery driver). The Amazon Flex program is only actively recruiting in a few areas, so make sure to check their website here to see if they are recruiting in your area.

Here’s the breakdown for being a full-time delivery driver with Amazon:

    • Benefits such as a 401(k) savings plan, Medical/Dental/Vision Coverage, Paid time-off, and more.

    • Average salary is about $49,414 per year. Compensation seems to range from about $16-$25 per hour.

    • Do not need a CDL License to drive the Amazon vehicles

    • Most likely do not need to provide a resume to get hired. This could be good for people looking to build up their current resume and also speeds up the hiring process.

4. Get Paid to Shop

Another great option for those looking for a flexible work schedule is becoming a professional shopper! Instacart, for example, is a grocery delivery service that hires people to shop for and deliver groceries to those who order in their local area. Similar to DoorDash and Amazon Flex, Instacart Shoppers can choose when they would like to shop for and deliver groceries. You can even choose to just do the shopping in store as a part-time worker if you aren’t comfortable doing deliveries.

Salary seems to range for full-time shoppers, from $10 to up to $25 per hour. This depends on how busy shifts are and what you're able to make in tips. A similar service to Instacart, Shipt, claims to pay up to $22 an hour for shoppers.

Some other companies that pay people to shop include Burpy, Care.com, Favor, and TaskRabbit.

5. Freelance

If you are particularly skilled in any area (e.g. art, graphic design, education, copywriting, marketing), becoming a freelancer is also a great option for a side hustle or potential full-time job. You can either start completely from scratch with this, or use sites like Upwork, Designhill, or We Work Remotely to promote your areas of expertise and connect with interested agencies and businesses.

Salary and pay ranges for freelancers depending on the area of work. For example, a freelance writer can make between $33K and $76K per year. A freelance artist can make an average of $19K to $83K per year.

While this particular option requires more self-discipline than the others, it offers a flexible schedule and can allow you to turn your favorite passion into a career with the right strategy. For more tips on starting off in the freelancing world, check out this helpful article.

6. Become a Dog Walker and/or Pet Sitter

This option is for all the animal lovers out there! There are many websites and apps that allow pet owners to hire someone to take their dogs on walks, petsit, and more. The majority offer flexible schedules, and also have competitive pay.

Rover is one of the most prominent of these sites, offering boarding, house sitting, dog walking, doggy day care, and drop-in visits. All pet sitters have to pass a basic background check and fill out a profile to start, but they are able to set their own schedule and prices. They are also able to set size, age, and other pet preferences depending on what they feel comfortable with. Rover states that you can earn up to $1000 a month as a sitter, and other websites average pay at about $22 an hour.

Some other websites that offer jobs for pet sitting include DogWalker.com, PetSitter.com, Care.com Dog Walking, and Fetch! Pet Care
